Investigating the Haunted Bourbon Orleans Hotel: Did We Find Any Ghosts?

If you're looking for one of the most famous haunted hotels in New Orleans, the Bourbon Orleans Hotel is almost always at the top of the list. With over two centuries of history, stories of ghostly children, a lonely ballroom dancer, a Confederate soldier, and the mysterious nun of Room 644 have made this French Quarter landmark a favorite destination for paranormal investigators.

Of course, ghost stories don't automatically make a place haunted.

As skeptical paranormal investigators, we wanted to see what we could find for ourselves.

Arriving at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel

After arriving in New Orleans, we checked into the beautiful Bourbon Orleans Hotel. Even before stepping inside, it's easy to see why so many people are drawn to this historic building. Its elegant balconies, grand architecture, and rich history give it an atmosphere that feels as though it belongs in another century.

The hotel has lived many lives over the years. It began as part of the Orleans Ballroom, one of the city's premier entertainment venues, before later serving as a convent, school, and orphanage. Every chapter of its history has added another layer to the legends surrounding the property.

Whether those legends are true is another question entirely.

The Ghost Stories

Before beginning our investigation, we looked into the stories that have made the Bourbon Orleans famous.

The most well-known apparition is a woman who is said to continue dancing beneath the ballroom chandeliers long after the music has stopped. Guests have reported seeing her gliding across the empty ballroom before disappearing without a trace.

Others claim they've encountered a wounded Confederate soldier wandering the halls, seemingly searching for someone he never found.

Perhaps the most famous story centers around Room 644. According to local legend, a nun took her own life there, and guests have reported seeing her standing silently at the foot of their beds during the night.

Then there are the children.

When the building operated as an orphanage, many children lived within its walls. Today, guests sometimes report hearing laughter, footsteps running through empty hallways, and playful voices when no children are present.

Those are some impressive claims.

But could we experience any of them ourselves?

Searching for Room 644

Our first stop was the sixth floor.

This floor is often described as one of the most active areas of the hotel, so naturally we wanted to see the infamous Room 644 for ourselves.

Walking down the hallway was surprisingly quiet. Aside from the occasional voices from other guests and the normal sounds you'd expect in an old hotel, nothing immediately stood out.

Eventually, we found Room 644.

Standing outside the room certainly adds to the experience when you know its reputation. Whether anyone was staying inside, we had no idea, so we quietly snapped a Polaroid photo nearby before moving on.

No mysterious shadows.

No cold spots.

No ghostly nun greeting us at the door.

Sometimes that's exactly how paranormal investigations go.

Exploring the Ballroom

Next, we headed toward the historic ballroom, home of the hotel's most famous ghost story.

The grand staircase leading toward the ballroom is beautiful, especially under the warm glow of the chandeliers. It's easy to imagine elegant parties taking place here nearly two hundred years ago.

Unfortunately, the ballroom itself wasn't open during our visit.

We quietly checked several doors, hoping to catch a glimpse inside where the famous dancing woman is said to appear.

No luck.

Still, simply standing outside such a historic room was worth the walk.

A "Ghost" in Our Polaroid

During our exploration, we took several Polaroid photographs around the hotel.

One image immediately caught our attention.

At first glance, it looked exactly like someone was standing in the picture.

For a moment, we wondered if we had actually captured something unusual.

Then we investigated.

It turned out the mysterious figure was nothing more than a decorative artificial plant viewed from just the right angle.

This is a perfect example of why it's so important to investigate potential evidence before jumping to paranormal conclusions. Our brains are incredibly good at recognizing human shapes—even when no person is actually there. It's a phenomenon known as pareidolia, and it explains many photographs that initially appear ghostly.

While it wasn't evidence of a haunting, it was still a great reminder of why skepticism is such an important part of ghost hunting.

Exploring the Hotel at Night

We continued wandering through the hotel, visiting the quiet pool area, the courtyard, and several dimly lit corridors that certainly felt atmospheric after dark.

Were they creepy?

Absolutely.

Did we experience anything we couldn't explain?

Not this time.

No ghostly laughter.

No wandering Confederate soldier.

No mysterious nun.

No dancing apparition.

Sometimes the most interesting result is finding nothing at all.

Final Thoughts

The Bourbon Orleans Hotel is one of the most beautiful historic hotels we've visited. Its fascinating history, elegant architecture, and countless ghost stories make it well worth experiencing, whether you're interested in the paranormal or simply looking for a unique place to stay in New Orleans.

As for the hauntings?

During our visit, we didn't capture any convincing paranormal evidence. We did, however, catch ourselves almost mistaking a fake plant for a ghost—a perfect reminder that careful investigation should always come before extraordinary conclusions.

That's exactly how we like to approach every haunted location: with an open mind, healthy skepticism, and a willingness to let the evidence speak for itself.
