How to Use an EMF Meter for Ghost Hunting: Testing the K2 at the George Washington Hotel

Hey, spooky cats!

During our investigation at the George Washington Hotel, I spent some time testing one of the most recognizable pieces of ghost-hunting equipment: the K2 EMF meter.

You’ve probably seen these devices in paranormal videos. The investigator places the meter in the middle of a dark room, asks the spirits to light it up, and suddenly the green lights jump to yellow or red.

Ghost confirmed, right?

Not so fast.

An EMF meter detects electromagnetic fields. Those fields can be produced by electrical wiring, phones, cameras, clocks, appliances, heating systems, and plenty of other completely ordinary objects.

The meter can be useful during a paranormal investigation, but only when we understand what it is actually detecting.

Otherwise, your haunted hotel room may quickly become filled with possessed cameras, ghostly clocks, and one extremely suspicious curtain.

What Does a K2 EMF Meter Detect?

A K2 meter is designed to detect changes in electromagnetic fields. Its row of colored lights rises from green through yellow, orange, and red as the electromagnetic field becomes stronger.

During my test at the George Washington Hotel, I placed the meter near several pieces of equipment on the table.

The results were dramatic.

My Polaroid camera appeared to be haunted.

My thermal camera appeared to be haunted.

One of my other devices appeared to be haunted.

Even the clock made the meter jump.

Of course, none of that meant these objects contained spirits. The K2 was reacting to the electromagnetic fields created by the electronics.

That is exactly what the meter is supposed to do.

The Wrong Way to Use an EMF Meter

The wrong way to use an EMF meter is to turn it on, carry it into an unfamiliar room, and treat every flashing light as evidence of paranormal activity.

An investigator might walk toward a wall and see the meter rise into the yellow or red range. Without checking the surroundings, they may announce that an invisible presence is standing nearby.

But the wall could contain electrical wiring.

The investigator might place the meter beside a camera and see it flash.

The camera could be producing the reading.

The meter might react when someone receives a text message, when an appliance cycles on, or when another device begins transmitting.

Without a baseline reading, there is no way to know whether the electromagnetic field is unusual or simply part of the normal environment.

The wrong way to use an EMF meter includes:

  • Treating every spike as evidence of a ghost
  • Ignoring nearby electronics
  • Leaving phones beside the meter
  • Placing it beside cameras or other equipment
  • Failing to check walls for electrical wiring
  • Moving the meter constantly without marking where readings occur
  • Asking questions before measuring the room’s normal EMF levels
  • Assuming flashing lights prove communication

A K2 meter can tell you that an electromagnetic field is present. It cannot tell you what created that field.

It definitely cannot confirm that the source is a ghost.

Establishing an EMF Baseline

The correct way to begin using an EMF meter is to map the room before starting the paranormal session.

Walk slowly through the area and note where the meter reacts.

Check around:

  • Electrical outlets
  • Lamps
  • Clocks
  • Televisions
  • Cameras
  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Extension cords
  • Light switches
  • Walls that may contain wiring

During the George Washington Hotel test, I discovered an area near the wall where the K2 repeatedly climbed into the yellow range.

At first, the location seemed strange.

The meter reacted near the curtain, which briefly raised the amusing possibility of a haunted curtain. The reading also appeared low to the ground, only about two feet high.

Naturally, this led to another theory: perhaps we had discovered a tiny ghost.

Possibly a ghost cat.

Unfortunately for our miniature feline spirit, there was a much more likely explanation.

The reading remained in the same location and returned whenever I moved the meter back toward the wall. That suggested there may have been electrical wiring or another source of electromagnetic energy inside the wall.

The fact that the reading stayed in a specific area made it look less like a moving spirit and more like a fixed environmental source.

Repeatability Matters

One of the most important parts of testing any paranormal device is repeatability.

When the K2 reacted near the wall, I moved it away.

The reading dropped.

I returned it to the same location.

The meter climbed back into the yellow.

That repeated response helped identify the area as a consistent electromagnetic source.

If a reading happens in the same place every time, the next step should be to search for an environmental explanation.

A paranormal event would become more interesting if the reading:

  • Appeared in an area that had previously shown no EMF activity
  • Moved through the room
  • Responded repeatedly to specific requests
  • Occurred with electronics removed or turned off
  • Could not be traced to wiring, appliances, or transmitting devices

Even then, the meter would only show that an unexplained electromagnetic change occurred. It would not prove that a spirit caused it.

“Unexplained” is not the same thing as “paranormal.”

Testing Your Own Equipment

Before starting an investigation, test the EMF meter around every piece of equipment you plan to use.

Move the K2 near your cameras, recorders, phones, thermal devices, clocks, radios, and battery packs.

Learn how close the meter must be before each object causes a reaction.

This is especially important when several devices are sitting together on a table. During my test, the entire equipment table produced EMF activity.

If I had placed the K2 among those devices and asked a ghost to light it up, I probably would have received a very enthusiastic response.

Unfortunately, that response would have come from the equipment itself.

Whenever possible, place the EMF meter several feet away from other electronics. Turn off unnecessary devices and keep phones in airplane mode—or remove them completely.

You should also test whether your camera affects the meter. A K2 sitting beside the camera may flash because of the camera’s electronics or wireless features.

That is not spirit communication. That is your equipment having a conversation with your other equipment.

What About the Knock?

During the investigation, something interesting happened.

The K2 blinked at approximately the same time that a knocking sound occurred.

At first glance, that kind of combination can seem compelling. A sound and an EMF change happening together may appear to be two separate pieces of evidence supporting the same event.

I also considered whether I had accidentally bumped the meter against the camera. However, I did not believe that was the source of the noise. The camera had a rubbery surface and would not normally create that type of knocking sound.

Still, one coincidental blink and knock are not enough to establish a connection.

The next step would be to attempt to repeat the event.

Could we ask for another knock and receive another EMF response? Did the meter continue reacting in that area? Was there wiring nearby? Could the sound have come from the building, plumbing, furniture, or another guest?

The timing was interesting, but interesting is not the same thing as proof.

It belongs in the “worth reviewing” category—not the “ghost confirmed” folder.

The Right Way to Use an EMF Meter

The right way to use a K2 meter is as an environmental measurement tool, not an automatic ghost detector.

Before the investigation:

  1. Test the meter around your own equipment.
  2. Map the room for existing electromagnetic fields.
  3. Identify outlets, appliances, clocks, cameras, and possible wiring.
  4. Mark areas that produce consistent readings.
  5. Remove or turn off unnecessary electronics.

During the investigation:

  1. Keep the meter stationary whenever possible.
  2. Record the meter continuously on camera.
  3. Note the exact time of any unusual reading.
  4. Watch whether anyone is moving near it.
  5. Check whether phones or equipment were transmitting.
  6. Attempt to repeat the response.
  7. Compare the reading with the baseline you recorded earlier.

After the investigation:

  1. Review the footage from multiple camera angles.
  2. Check whether another device activated at the same time.
  3. Return to the location and attempt to recreate the reading.
  4. Look for ordinary sources before considering paranormal explanations.

The goal should not be to prove that the K2 reacted.

The goal should be to determine why it reacted.

Can High EMF Levels Affect People?

Finding elevated electromagnetic fields in a room can be useful even when they have nothing to do with ghosts.

During the hotel test, the strongest repeated reading appeared near a specific section of the wall. Since the source may have been electrical wiring, I decided it was probably not the best place to sit for an extended period.

Some paranormal investigators have suggested that unusual electromagnetic environments may contribute to sensations such as discomfort, nervousness, or the feeling of being watched. However, it is difficult to determine whether those experiences come from the EMF itself, the setting, suggestion, or a combination of factors.

Either way, locating strong electromagnetic fields helps investigators understand the environment.

A guest might report feeling uneasy beside a particular wall. If the same wall contains a strong electrical field, that information should be documented before the experience is labeled paranormal.

Is the K2 a Useful Ghost-Hunting Tool?

A K2 meter can be useful during paranormal investigations—but probably not in the way it is often shown online.

It is best used to:

  • Find hidden electrical sources
  • Map wiring inside walls
  • Identify interference from equipment
  • Document changes in the environment
  • Test whether an EMF event can be repeated
  • Rule out false positives

It should not be used as a magical yes-or-no device for communicating with spirits.

A flashing K2 means the meter detected an electromagnetic field. It does not mean a ghost is answering your question.

During our test at the George Washington Hotel, the meter reacted to cameras, equipment, a clock, and what was probably wiring inside the wall.

We may not have discovered a tiny ghost cat hiding behind the curtain, but we did learn something useful about the room.

And that is what good paranormal investigation should do.

We test the environment, challenge our assumptions, and investigate the strange things that remain after the ordinary explanations have been considered.
